dining in with... Andre Agassi & Steffi Graf

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf may best be known for their prowess on the court, but the couple is working on a new legacy: spreading their love for healthy living to the masses. Agassi, 38, and Graf, 39, are investors in Eaturna, a new company offering fresh, organic and low-fat meals. We asked the tennis greats and parents of two how they handle the challenge of raising healthy kids.

q You both grew up as super-competitive athletes. How has your relationship to food changed over the years?
Andre: Early on we focused on food as a source of energy. It was a means to an end. Now, food is more of a joy than a fuel.

q Who does the cooking in your house? The shopping?
Steffi: We both do the shopping. We also share the cooking. Andre usually is in charge of marinating and grilling the meat or fish, and I make salads and vegetables.

q How do you involve your kids in the kitchen?
Steffi: We encourage our kids to pitch in. One seasons the meats and the other cuts vegetables. They love to be a part of the process.

q When your kids want a treat, what do they ask for?
Andre: Like most kids, they love ice cream.

q And you?
Andre: I don’t really have much of a sweet tooth. When I was younger, chips and fries were my real weaknesses. Steffi: I make up for Andre. I love cakes and cookies.

q What five foods do you always keep in your fridge?
Steffi: Fruit, vegetables, eggs, bacon and pickles.

q Any advice for parents on building healthy habits?
Steffi: Create an environment that makes healthy living routine. As soon as being healthy becomes an effort, kids will push back. Keeping healthy food in the house; making physical activity fun; making it a priority to eat as a family—all are critical to help kids learn healthy habits.
